Bridging the Divide: Collaborating with Deaf Sign Alliance, Uganda
I recently led an exciting and transformative project that brought together my Grade 8 Drama students and the Deaf Sign Alliance in Kampala. Our goal was to create an inclusive performance that truly bridged the communication gap between hearing and non-hearing audiences by integrating spoken word, sign language, dance, and music.
This collaborative effort was more than just a performance-it was a powerful, multisensory narrative designed to challenge conventional barriers and foster empathy and understanding. Working alongside Deaf Sign Alliance, we focused on empowering deaf performers to lead the artistic expression while building confidence and capacity within my students to deliver a performance accessible to all community members.
The process was both inspiring and challenging. Simple things like giving directions required us to learn and navigate sign language, and we had to anticipate accessibility needs at every stage. But the outcome was worth it: the performance not only connected diverse audiences but also motivated participants to embrace social responsibility and collective action.
This initiative reflects a commitment to culturally responsive education and inclusive arts programming. It highlights how interdisciplinary collaboration can create barrier-free spaces where deaf culture is celebrated, and everyone feels they belong.
I’m proud to have been part of a project that demonstrates the power of inclusive performance art to build bridges, raise awareness, and advocate for social change.
This initiative as inspired my next research paper. Watch this space.
