Embarking on a PhD journey is both challenging and rewarding. One of the most crucial moments for me was the proposal submission. The ideas of my research plan facing scrutiny and feedback was daunting. This stage also comes with a wave of opportunity, it offered me a chance to sharpen my focus and build confidence around Arts based thinking and Arts research. The submission of my PhD proposal on culturally responsive drama pedagogies in international middle schools marked a key milestone, providing limited but valuable feedback that fueled my progress and boosted my confidence.

Highlights from the Proposal Evaluation

The evaluation from the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Studies confirmed that many parts of the research proposal were well-crafted and solid. The study focuses on culturally responsive drama pedagogies aimed at creating inclusive, identity-affirming learning environments in international middle school classrooms. Several core sections received positive confirmation, including:

  • Background context

  • Theoretical framework

  • Key concepts

  • Research design

  • Data collection strategies

  • Trustworthiness measures

  • Ethical considerations

  • Limitations

  • Chapter outlines

  • References

Each of these sections was marked with a clear "Yes," signaling strong preparation and understanding of the research scope. I couldn't believe that what once started as scribbles on a journal was now developing into clear intent. My interactions with my peers and supervisors reflected confidence in the proposal’s foundation propelled my readiness to move forward.

What This Stage Taught Me

The proposal writing process was more than a formality; it was a confidence boost. This part of the journey highlighted the gaps in arts-based research, especially in the context of culturally responsive pedagogy for Arts teaching and Learning, it presented itself as a niche but vital area especially in International School teaching and learning.

Sharing intentions openly invites essential feedback that refines the research vision without slowing momentum. Supervisors act as guides and supporters, helping to shape the project while encouraging persistence.

Next Steps in the Research Journey

With feedback in hand, the next phase involves addressing the suggested refinements quickly and thoughtfully. This progress is a green light to deepen my practice and explore how drama can foster inclusive learning environments that affirm diverse identities.

Sharing this experience aims to inspire other educators and researchers working in specialized fields like performing arts education. My biggest take away is persistence and openness to feedback are key.
