Research Paper Takeaway
Traditional Brainstorming Techniques:
Methods: Freewriting, mind mapping, listing (Campbell & Ballenger, 2009; Rao, 2007).
Benefits: Encourages creativity, critical thinking, individual or group exploration.
Limitations: Can be repetitive, limited by time, and may restrict idea diversity and depth (Oliva & Elaziz, 2020).
AI-Driven Brainstorming Techniques:
Methods: Utilising AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Bing to enhance idea generation.
Benefits: Expands idea access, offers varied perspectives, vocabulary options, and prompts that stimulate creative thinking (Aung et al., 2022; Santos, 2023).
Supports initial stages of process writing by promoting diverse and well-structured ideas improving writing quality.
Personal Classroom Experience
In my drama and english lessons I found blending traditional and AI brainstorming proved most effective. Starting with freewriting or mind mapping grounded learners in ownership, then transitioning to AI tools unlocked deeper, nuanced ideas especially for my MYP students.
I emphasized visible thinking via handwritten notes or sketches during both phases, addressing my key concern: paranoia over "invisible" processes in fully digital AI sessions. This hybrid built transparency, reduced over-reliance, and amplified engagement without losing the tactile spark of traditional methods.
